The Danger of Drifting

August 30, 2026 · Carson Williamson · 52:54

Most people who drift from God never decide to walk away. It happens quietly, the way an ocean current carries a swimmer far down the beach before he ever looks back at the shore. One skipped day in the Bible becomes a week, prayer grows thin, church becomes optional, and the things that once brought conviction slowly become comfortable. Hebrews 2 warns believers to pay close attention, because spiritual drift starts in the heart long before it shows on the outside, and it is possible to stay busy in the work of God while growing distant from God Himself. Neglect is enough to do the damage. This message also speaks plainly to anyone who has been around church without ever being born again, because being religious will not save, and no one is promised tomorrow. The good news is that no one has to keep drifting. God calls us to examine our hearts, to anchor ourselves in Christ and His unchanging Word, to turn around and return to what we know is right, and to take one step back toward Him. Like the prodigal son, the wanderer will find the Father waiting with open arms.
